Are Automatic Query Tools Good or Bad?
There are many programatic tools available that, among other tasks,
query search engines to determine a website’s position within the SERPs
(search engine results page). This is a practice frowned on by many search engines.
In fact, the use of such tools is against their terms of service.
According to Google: “Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages,
check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our
Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as
WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.”
Visit Google’s
webmaster guidelines to read more of their standing on this topic.
So why are these tools available and used? My guess is the simple fact of the consumption of time to determine a site’s position within the search engines. Tools were developed to simplify this task. If you ask me, all you need to do is enter your website into the search bar of any search engine and if your site is not listed within the first three pages of the SERPs, then you need to do a lot more work.
Where Does Your Site Rank in the Search Engines?
An often asked question with a simple answer: If your website is not listed within the first three pages of a search for the entered keyword, it doesn't matter where your site is ranked.
I know, that sounds a bit harsh, but when you really think about it, it's true. When you do an internet search on a specific topic, how many pages do you go through before you try a different keyword or key phrase? I'm guessing not too many. Many searchers only go through the first three pages of a search engine's list of results; if your site does not come up in the results, they don't find it. I strongly advise against using tools to try to locate the ranking of your website as many search engines - especially Goolge - frown upon this practice.
A website's position is based on a number of factors, most of which are secrets not released by the individual search engines. The general aspects to increase rank is to provide quality content to capture the attention of your visitors, beef up your knowledge of the keywords people will use to locate your site, and increase the number of high quality sites that link to your site.
